For his study on fibre optics application in communication, Professor Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009. However, instead of applying for a patent, he shared the technology with the public to benefit the world. The directions that he laid down for the Faculty of Engineering 20 years ago still go well with the development of the university, and in accordance with Hong Kong’s overall development.
