The Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR) held its 20th annual meeting at CUHK on July 10 to 13. SSSR is an interdisciplinary organization with over 1000 members worldwide from the areas of psychology, education, neuroscience and language teaching. Its President-elect is Prof. Catherine McBride from the Psychology Department of CUHK.
The meeting was co-organized by the Psychology Department of CUHK. SSSR had never held its annual meetings outside North America or Europe, so this was its first time ever in Asia.
Nearly 400 participants from 36 countries or territories attended the meeting. Of them, 50 were from New Zealand and Australia, while the remaining participants came from North America, Europe and Asia. CUHK professors from the Schools of Education, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Humanities were also invited to attend the meeting.
Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK welcomed the delegates on July 10. Two prominent psychologists Prof. Michael Posner and Prof. Robert Plomin delivered the keynote speeches on this first day of the meeting. The meeting consisted of a variety of symposia and poster presentations, focusing on understanding the development of literacy skills, learning to read in a second language, expert reading and reading and writing difficulties such as dyslexia.
