The 3rd International Symposium on CSL Teaching and Learning was held on 22 March, 2013. The Symposium was organized by the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre of CUHK, with the support from the Research Centre for Chinese Linguistics of the Department of Chinese Language & Literature and Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages. Themed ‘Linguistics and CSL Teaching and Learning: Theories and Practices in the Training of Pragmatic Abilities’, the organizer invited key players in the field from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the US, Singapore and attracted stakeholders such as language teachers and postgraduates to join. The Symposium was well-received with over 150 participants.
Dr WU Weiping, host of the academic event said that the purpose of the Symposium was to bridge CSL researchers and practitioners. Prof. FENG Shengli of the Chinese Department reinforced the important function of such a “bridge”, which allows for researchers to learn what is going on in the teaching field and the teachers to benefit from findings in CSL research.
The Symposium is one of the CUHK’s 50th Anniversary celebratory events. Prof. LEUNG Yuen Sang, Dean of Faculty of Arts, gave an opening remark, commenting that the organizer and co-organizers are forming a “golden triangle” on language teaching and research. He praised all parties concerned for their efforts to provide such a platform so that professionals, teachers and graduate students can meet and share their views.
