CUHK celebrates Golden Jubilee with 100 elderly

With the whole-hearted support of CUHK volunteers, including students, staff, alumni and their friends, “CU50 • Care” invited over 100 elderly people to CUHK campus to celebrate the university’s 50th birthday on October 5.

Together with Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, the seniors had a fun class in learning how to make Chinese birthday buns. They also enjoyed amazing performances of Cantonese opera by children aged 8 to 15, and attended a health talk given by the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology.

In the afternoon, they were taken on a campus tour led by the CU50‧Care volunteers .This was the conclusion to a wonderful day at CUHK enjoyed by all the elderly guests.

Induction Ceremony for Professor the Honourable
Jao Tsung-I as Associate Foreign Member of Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Institut de France held in CUHK

Prof. the Honourable Jao Tsung-I, GBM, a world-renowned sinologist and Wei Lun Honorary Professor of Fine Arts at CUHK, has been named Associate Foreign Member of Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Institut de France. The induction ceremony was held on September 19 at Lee Hysan Concert Hall on CUHK campus.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Institut de France along with Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor, CUHK, Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Head of Chung Chi College and Dean of Faculty of Arts, CUHK and Prof. Jenny So, Professor of Fine Arts and Director of Art Museum of Institute of Chinese Studies, CUHK as well as 200 local and overseas dignitaries from academic, fine arts, cultural and religious sectors who all conveyed their warm congratulations to Professor Jao.

CUHK to hold the 73rd Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees

CUHK will hold the 73rd Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees on October 17, the University’s Foundation Day. Dr. Vincent H.C. Cheng, Chairman of the University Council will confer honorary degrees at the Congregation. In addition, Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President will officiate at the Inauguration of the Choh-Ming Li Professorships.

Chen Keng’s ‘Images of CUHK’ - oil painting exhibition

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CUHK, the Office of the Arts Administrator (OAA) has invited Chen Keng, an artist who paints in oils, to hold an exhibition of his works on the theme of CUHK. This series of paintings, which Chen started to work on in 2003, depicts the poetic beauty of nature in the campus. The exhibition will display some twenty pieces of work to provide CUHK members and the public a fine opportunity to appreciate a unique view of the University through an artistic perspective. An opening ceremony will be held on October 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Law summit to discuss the opportunities and challenges of legal education

The Faculty of Law will hold a summit on “Legal Education in The Global Context: Opportunities and Challenges”. The summit will discuss the opportunities and challenges for legal education in the 21st century. It will identify the set of knowledge and skills law students need to acquire in this era of a globalized economy, such as the ability to analyze legal issues from a comparative perspective and it will explore possible areas of collaboration in relation to research and teaching.

Participants include government officials, judges, law school deans, legal education experts and other distinguished guests, from various jurisdictions, including the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Prof. Samuel Sun on how scientists sail through the sea of science

On September 17, Prof. Samuel Sun presented a 50th Anniversary Fair Public Lecture entitled “Sailing the Seas of Science: The Dream of Hong Kong Plant Scientists” to share with the audience the dream of plant scientists in Hong Kong.  The lecture attracted over 130 participants, including academics, students, alumni and members of the public.

During the lecture, Professor Sun introduced the team which was formed by a group of plant scientists from different universities in Hong Kong in 2000. The team’s project succeeded in becoming an Area of Excellence in Plant Biotechnology supported by the University Grants Committee (UGC). In 2006, the team's outstanding achievements received world class assessment by the international monitoring panel of UGC and secured further sustained funding support. It was later approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, which led to the State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology being set up in 2008. Over the years, these scientists have been working together towards a common goal.

Education scholars shared insights on internet addiction

CUHK presented another 50th Anniversary Fair Public Lecture at Hong Kong Central Library on September 21. The title of the lecture was “Shaking off Internet Addiction: Issues and Challenges”. It was jointly delivered by four scholars, including Mr. Chan Tak-hang, Prof. Alvin Leung, Prof. Barley Mak, and Dr. Yuen Pong-yiu. Over 200 participants, including academics, students, alumni and members of the public attended the lecture.  

In the form of an open forum, the four education scholars defined and discussed internet addiction, a problematic issue for modern people worldwide, especially adolescents and emerging adults. Through case study analysis, the four speakers probed the issue from psychological and mental perspectives, as well as from the points of view of principals, teachers and parents.

Anniversary roving exhibitions rolled out in secondary schools

The University is now arranging a roving exhibition through over 10 local secondary schools to provide an opportunity for Hong Kong students to have a deeper understanding of CUHK's history, campus life and research studies. The exhibtion’s first stop was at Christian Alliance S C Chan Memorial College, where it ran from September 18 to September 24. Students were very interested in the exhibits, which helped them towards early preparation for further study.

Mid-Autumn Guqin Concert drew full house

The Mid-Autumn Guqin Concert was successfully held in the Art Museum, Institute of Chinese Studies on September 13. The concert attracted a large audience of over 200, including colleagues, alumni, students, as well as members of the Deyin Qin Society. Filled with the beautiful Guqin music, the exhibition gallery was turned into a concert hall.

Prof. Joseph Sung, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fung Tung, the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Archie Lee, the Director of Institute of Chinese Studies, Mr. Christopher Mok, the Chairman of Advisory Committee of the Art Museum, Ms. Kun Yim Fong, the Master of the Buruxian Shi as well as Ms. Betty Lo and Mr. Richard Chu, the Masters of Mengdiexuan were among the guests who enjoyed the concert and the spectacular view of the full moon night.
