Following the release of the first two episodes on Li Choh-ming and Xiao Si, two new episodes of “CU50 • The People” have been launched featuring Charles K. Kao and Edward Y.Y. Ng.
Prof. Charles Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for his study on fibre optics application in communication. Yet, instead of applying for a patent, he shared the technology with the public to benefit the world. Prof. Edward Ng once saw some mainland students risking their lives, wading across a river which they did daily to get to school. In his desire to help them, he came up the idea of Wu Zhi Qiao.
“CU50 • The People” video series features generations of CUHK people who have shaped the University into what it has become today; the trailblazers, those who have served the community determinedly, those who have lived up to the humanistic spirit of CUHK, and those whose characteristics signify the anniversary theme “Embrace our Culture; Empower our Future”.

Synopsis:
A group of plant scientists from different universities in Hong Kong formed a team in 2000 and succeeded in establishing an Area of Excellence in Plant Biotechnology with the support of the University Grants Committee (UGC). The team, through basic and applied research and the application of molecular and biotechnological approaches, focuses on rice and soybean research. In 2006, the team's outstanding achievements were conclusively assessed as world class by the international monitoring panel of UGC and further sustained funding support was secured. In 2008, the team was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China with the status of State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology. It has been 14 years since the formation of the team so what bonds these plant scientists together and sustains their efforts? What motivates them? What is the springboard for their innovations? Why have they selected hybrid rice and soybean to work on? What have they achieved? And in the final analysis, what is their common dream in this joint endeavor? Prof. Samuel S.M. Sun will answer these questions and share with the audience the aspirations of the Hong Kong Plant Scientists in this lecture.

16 Chung Chi College students from various departments, who had joined the Service-Learning Programme (Mainland), went to Yangshuo and Guilin in Guangxi from July 13 to August 3 to take part in a social service programme. The service recipients were local high school students and peasants. This was the fourth consecutive years of the programme.
A three-week English learning camp was organized by the CUHK students to help the local students to improve their English proficiency and build up their confidence in using the language. The camp was conducted in small groups. Forty local students were divided into four small teaching groups so that they could communicate more efficiently. Through a series of teaching activities, the local students not only made progress in their English, but also in personal growth, leadership skills and team spirit.
In addition, our students also visited the rural villages to share simple medical knowledge of chronic diseases with the elderly peasants. At the end of the programme, all the participants found that it had been an invaluable experience.

Fourteen adorable children, aged four to seven, took part in the “Story Telling Competition” organized by the Art Museum on August 2. All of them gave their best in their performances by making use of handmade props including a pyramid, keys and coins, to tie in with the competition’s “gold” theme. Their brilliant performances won enthusiastic applause from the audiences and judges.
The competition was the grand finale of the parent-child story telling activity organized by the Art Museum in conjunction with the “Radiant Legacy: Ancient Chinese Gold from the Mengdiexuan Collection” exhibition. Prior to the competition, the children attended a four-day creative workshop hosted by renowned children’s literature writers and educators Poon Ming Chu and Poon Kam Ying. The children were taught the craft of creating and telling a story, as well as how to use props to assist their performances.
Dr. Josh Yiu, Associate Director of the Museum, Poon Ming Chu and Poon Kam Ying acted as judges of the competition. Six winners were finally chosen as below:
