50th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Herbert W. Marsh

CUHK is honored to have invited Prof. Herbert W. Marsh to be the speaker of the next 50th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture. The subject of the lecture will be “Student Evaluation of University Teaching: Recommendation for Policy and Practice”. Details are as follows:

Parent-child story telling activity by the Art Museum

In conjunction with the ‘Radiant Legacy: Ancient Chinese Gold from the Mengdiexuan Collection’ exhibition, the Art museum will organize a parent-child story telling activity starting late July to early August.

Hosted by renowned children literature writers and educators Poon Ming Chu and Poon Kam Ying, the event aims to inspire children’s creativity and arts appreciation skills, train their story telling skills as well as enhance parent-child communications through the appreciation of exquisite gold artwork.

Target participants of the events are children aged 4 to 9 and their parents / guardians. Activities include:

Gold Storytelling Workshops (3 sessions) July 24, 25 & 26
Creativity Writing Workshop July 27
Storytelling Competition August 2

CUHK Alumni Celebrated the Golden Jubilee with a good swing!

Organized by CUHK Alumni Golf Association, CUHK Golden Jubilee Alumni Golf Competition (Inter-college and Inter-university) / CUHKAGA 2013 3rd Annual Tournament, was successfully held at the Phoenix Hill Golf Course, Dongguan on June 15. Prof. Ching Pak Chung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Ms. Connie Au, Director of Alumni Affairs attended the event on behalf of the University. After heated competition, CUHK team won the Inter-university competition by 2 strokes.

CU Chorus 40th anniversary Concert - "Northern Lights: Music of Ola Gjeilo"

CU Chorus held its 40th Anniversary Concert "Northern Lights: Music of Ola Gjeilo" on June 11 at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. The Chorus performed classics and new works from Hong Kong composers, as well as the works of featured composer Ola Gjeilo for an audience of 800. As a highlight of the concert, CU Chorus joined RTHK Quartet to perform the Hong Kong premiere of Norwegian composer Gjeilo's masterpiece "Dark Night of the Soul".

The concert not only marked a memorable page in the 40 year history of CU Chorus, but also a dedication to the Golden Jubilee of CUHK.

Prof. Cheung Kwok Wai talked about creative thinking

The third 50th Anniversary Fair Public Lecture, entitled ‘Rhapsody on Innovation’, presented by Prof. Cheung Kwok Wai of the Department of Information Engineering, was held at the Hong Kong Central Library on June 8.

Prof. Kwok-wai Cheung gave the audience advices on cultivating innovative mind-set of young people, and shared his views on the development of creative and innovative industries.

He started the lecture with the tea drinking culture in Hong Kong, and presented some unexpected but easy-to-understand examples of innovations from daily life incorporating with his own first-hand experience, to introduce the wonders and joy of the innovation process in a delightful and relaxed manner. The lecture touched upon science and technology, music, culture, genuine and fake innovations, as well as knowledge-based industries. Prof. Cheung hoped to bring out the creativity of young people and thus gave impetus to creative and innovative industries.

International Conference “New Directions in the Development of Creative and Media Industries”

The international conference “New Directions in the Development of Creative and Media Industries” organized by the School of Journalism and Communication, CUHK was held on campus from June 7 to 8. The conference was a platform for scholars’ discussion on the past, present, and future of the creative and media industries. Nearly a hundred participants attended the two-day conference and 22 scholars presented their papers, including three co-conveners and 19 leading scholars from renowned universities in Australia, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Taiwan, the Mainland and Hong Kong.

This conference conducted a comprehensive study of the game industries in HK and China from an international comparative perspective. Game industries (as an example of creative industries), game texts, new user and their experience, and cultural policy were discussed in the conference. Besides the newly emerging creative industries, media industries also respond to the changing technology, market and audience taste by evolving themselves into new cultural and media forms. The new business model and forms of media industries were discussed in the conference.
