CUHK cares for the elderly

In collaboration with Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service, “CU50 • Care” Campaign organized the “Dragon Boat Festival Elderly Care Programme” on June 8. More than forty students, staff and alumni and their family, some of them very young children, volunteered to visit the elderly living in the Wong Tai Sin District. They brought with them traditional Chinese rice dumplings and gift packs to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with the elderly.

CUHK 50th Anniversary Fair - Exhibition now on show at Times Square, Causeway Bay

The roving exhibition of CUHK 50th Anniversary Fair is now staged at the Ground Floor Covered Piazza of Times Square. Exhibits include historical collections of the University; as well as display panels to illustrate the latest development of the university.

The exhibition will last until 17 June (inclusive) and it opens daily from 10:00am to 10:00pm. All are welcome.

Alumni Family Day in the Art Museum

The Art Museum and the Department of Fine Arts jointly present an exhibition entitled “Radiant Legacy: Ancient Chinese Gold from the Mengdiexuan Collection” from May 5 to October 27. The exhibition showcases some 300 Eurasian and Chinese gold artefacts selected from the Mengdiexuan Collection, Hong Kong. The exhibits span a period of over 3,000 years, dating from ca. 1500 BCE to 1700 CE.

In order to encourage more alumni to visit the Art Museum with their family during weekends, the Museum and the Alumni Affairs Office will jointly organize the “Alumni Family Day in the Art Museum” on July 7 and Aug 4. There will be a guided tour and creative arts workshops. Each family will have a family portrait taken by a professional photographer and given a souvenir of the exhibition.

The programme has a quota of 20 participants (including the alumni and their family, a maximum of 4 persons per family). First come first served. Act fast!

Prof. Stephen Wong to talk about the development and future of sports science

The Faculty of Education has put together a series of public lectures to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CUHK. The sixth lecture organized by the Department of Sports Science & Physical Education will be held on June 22. Details are as follows:

Synopsis:

There has been a rapid development in the field of Sports Science in Hong Kong since 1980’s. Remarkable achievements in application and scientific research have been obtained. This emerging discipline has made significant contribution on elite performance and knowledge transfer. It is believed that an increasingly interdisciplinary approach will be vigorously adopted in propelling a sustainable growth of the field in the future.

International Conference on the Philosophy of Criminal Punishment

The Department of Philosophy will hold the “International Conference on the Philosophy of Criminal Punishment” from June 18 to 20. Co-organized by Chung Chi College and New Asia College.

The Conference will focus on three themes:

1. Why Punish? How Much?
2. Punishment and Social Justice
3. Should the Death Penalty be Abolished or Implemented?

Prof. Erin Kelly from Tuft University; Prof. T. M. Scanlon, Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity at Harvard University; and Prof. Tommie Shelby, Professor of African and African American Studies and of Philosophy at Harvard University, will deliver the keynote addresses. Besides local academics, other speakers of the Conference are from Belgium, Israel, Taiwan and the United States.

The opening sessions will be held in LT 2, Lee Shau Kee Building on June 18, whereas other sessions will take place in Room 220, Fung King Hey Building.

International Conference on Nucleic Acid Enzymes and Enzymes in Human Diseases (NAEEHD)

The Biochemistry Programme of the School of Life Sciences will host the International Conference on Nucleic Acid Enzymes and Enzymes in Human Diseases (NAEEHD) from June 16 to 21 at LT2, Mong Man Wai Building.

The NAEEHD Conference aims to update recent trends in the areas of structure-function studies of nucleic acid enzymes, as well as enzymologies in different diseases. Topics include:

1. Enzymes in DNA replication, gene transcription, DNA recombination, repair and mobility
2. Enzymes in biotechnology and medicine
3. Enzymes in epigenetic gene regulation and development
4. Enzymes in human diseases

The Conference will enhance our understanding of natural sciences and also enable us to better utilize these enzymes in medicinal sciences and biotechnology for the benefit of our society.

Some 50 research scientists including Sir Richard Roberts, New England Biolabs Inc. USA and 1993 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and Professor Sen-Fang Sui, Tsinghua University and Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences will give talks in their fields.

“The Ninth Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival” successfully concluded

Jointly presented by the Department of English and the Office of the Arts Administrator, and sponsored by the Dr. Tien Chang Lin Technology Innovation Foundation, “The Ninth Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival” held its performance finals at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall from June 4 to 6.

Twelve competing teams from Hong Kong (The Chinese University of Hong Kong & Lingnan University), Mainland (Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Jishou University, Northeast Normal University, Xiamen University of Technology, Southeast University, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Shenzhen University) and Taiwan (Soochow University) presented scenes from Shakespeare’s famous plays such as Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Henry V, As You Like It and King Lear. They all gave their best to the audience.

Soochow University was named the winner. Members of the team and their advisor/director were awarded a trip aboard for watching performances of professional Shakespearean theatre groups such as the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. CUHK was the 4th runner-up and the brilliant performance of its team member Joanne Leung warranted her the “Outstanding Actresses” award.

Adjudicators of the final were internationally acclaimed English scholars and theatre professionals, including Prof. John Gillies, expert on Shakespeare in East Asia and Professor of English, University of Essex; Prof. Peter Holbrook, Shakespeare Scholar and Professor at the University of Queensland; and Mr. Tony Turner, former Ethel Tory Head of Drama, Australian National University.

CUHK's 50th Anniversary Social Work Postgraduate Research Symposium

“The CUHK's 50th Anniversary Social Work Postgraduate Research Symposium” was held on May 30 and 31 at the Yasumoto International Academic Park. The Symposium was organized by the CUHK-Nankai Joint Research Centre of Social Policy, in association with CUHK’s Department of Social Work, Chung Chi College, Department of Social Work and Social Policy of Nankai University, and Social Policy Research Centre of National Taiwan University.

The two-day symposium aimed at providing an opportunity for research students from different parts of the world to share their research with each another. Nearly seventy research students from UK, Canada, Australia, the Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong presented their research projects encompassing various fields of social welfare and social work, including poverty, social security and employment; social care, migrants, elderly and disability; and child, youth and family policy. Eleven research students were given the Best Paper Award during the symposium.
